And Then Publishing is a micro press started in Leelanau County, Michigan and currently based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. And Then releases handmade books and is primarily interested in publishing first chapbooks & books of new and emerging poets and writers, especially those from the Great Lakes region.
What is a Micro Press?
You may have heard of or purchased books by a small press before. If a small press is like an appetizer, a micro press is an amuse bouche—all the flavor and mmm goodness in a smaller bite. I’ll borrow a great explanation from Jonathan Valelly at Broken Pencil:
“Many of these projects blur the line between traditional publishing, zines, DIY bookmaking, chapbook presses, and art experiments, but your typical micro-press is a one-or-two person operation, producing a few books a year in runs regularly clocking below 100 copies (and often far fewer). And, unsurprisingly, most of the people putting these editions together are writers themselves.”

And Then Lore
And Then Publishing and is a “one-person operation” piloted by poet and artist Isabella Gross. She developed interests in poetry and art in childhood that bloomed into passions in high school and exploded into life-sustaining practices in college. (Her parents narrowly avoided art school for undergrad, and boy were they not prepared for an MFA program in poetry! Just kidding, they’re big supporters of Bella’s degrees & And Then.) She figured that her love of printmaking and her wobbly attempts at digital art might pair well with her newfound knack for making little books of her own poems. She also happened to know a handful of talented, under-published poets from Michigan and Ohio that she pestered into letting her make little books from their favorite poems. And thus, And Then was born!
The micro press debuted in April of 2023 at Bella’s parents’ farmhouse in Leelanau County, Michigan. The micro press moved with her to western Wisconsin in the fall of 2023. The micro press has a truly midwestern story, and although it is currently away from the Great Lakes state, we are always a northern Michigander in heart and spirit.
